Paw­catuck — Robert F. Gillis Sr., 87, of Paw­catuck, hus­band of 61 years to An­nick “Ann” (Gril­lon) Gillis, passed away un­ex­pect­edly Mon­day, Aug. 28, 2017, at home.

Born in Lynn, Mass., he was the son of the late John and Julia (Mor­ri­son) Gillis and he lived in Paw­catuck for 40 years. Bob was a qual­ity as­sur­ance spe­cial­ist for the U.S. Gov­ern­ment, re­tir­ing in 1992.

Bob was an avid pilot. As a teenager, he re­ceived his com­mer­cial pilot’s li­cense and flew planes for over 60 years. In his spare time, Bob en­joyed writ­ing and had many ar­ti­cles pub­lished in news­pa­pers and mag­a­zines. Bob had an ad­ven­tur­ous spirit. As a young man he trav­eled the world. Later in life, he took up ski­ing at the age of 70 and parachuted out of a plane at age 78. Bob en­joyed lis­ten­ing to music and watch­ing old movies. He was also a vol­un­teer at The Wil­liam W. Backus Hospi­tal in Nor­wich for 15 years. Most of all, he loved spend­ing time with his fam­ily.

“Grand­pere” as he was af­fec­tion­ately known, will be deeply missed.

In ad­di­tion to his wife, he leaves his two chil­dren, Shirley Sar­gent and her hus­band, Jeff, of Mys­tic and Bob Gillis Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Elling­ton; five beloved grand­chil­dren, Bri­ana Sar­gent and her fi­ancé, Loni Robin­son, Deirdre Sar­gent and her hus­band, Daniel Her­witt, Ryan Sar­gent and his fi­ancée, Danielle Raf­fone and Julia and Olivia Gillis; a great-grand­son, Driver Dex Her­witt; and his beloved dog, Peter Skil­lett.

His fam­ily will re­ceive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Satur­day, Sept. 2, fol­lowed by a ser­vice at 11 a.m. at the Mys­tic Funeral Home lo­cated on Route 1 in Mys­tic. Burial will fol­low at the Ston­ing­ton Ceme­tery, N. Main St. with U.S. Army mil­i­tary hon­ors.
