Robert Gillis Sr.
Pawcatuck — Robert F. Gillis Sr., 87, of Pawcatuck, husband of 61 years to Annick “Ann” (Grillon) Gillis, passed away unexpectedly Monday, Aug. 28, 2017, at home.
Born in Lynn, Mass., he was the son of the late John and Julia (Morrison) Gillis and he lived in Pawcatuck for 40 years. Bob was a quality assurance specialist for the U.S. Government, retiring in 1992.
Bob was an avid pilot. As a teenager, he received his commercial pilot’s license and flew planes for over 60 years. In his spare time, Bob enjoyed writing and had many articles published in newspapers and magazines. Bob had an adventurous spirit. As a young man he traveled the world. Later in life, he took up skiing at the age of 70 and parachuted out of a plane at age 78. Bob enjoyed listening to music and watching old movies. He was also a volunteer at The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich for 15 years. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
“Grandpere” as he was affectionately known, will be deeply missed.
In addition to his wife, he leaves his two children, Shirley Sargent and her husband, Jeff, of Mystic and Bob Gillis Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Ellington; five beloved grandchildren, Briana Sargent and her fiancé, Loni Robinson, Deirdre Sargent and her husband, Daniel Herwitt, Ryan Sargent and his fiancée, Danielle Raffone and Julia and Olivia Gillis; a great-grandson, Driver Dex Herwitt; and his beloved dog, Peter Skillett.
His family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, followed by a service at 11 a.m. at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1 in Mystic. Burial will follow at the Stonington Cemetery, N. Main St. with U.S. Army military honors.
