Battle of the Sexes

- — Kristina Dorsey

“Battle of the Sexes” feels like two distinct movies. One is a drama about Billie Jean King’s sexual awakening. The other is a comedy about Bobby Riggs’ perpetual-center-of-attention personality and his PR-genius decision to challenge King to a battle-of-thesexes tennis match in 1973. Both parts of the film are fine; they just don’t feel cohesive. Emma Stone buries herself under King’s signature shag haircut and finds the soul beneath King’s sports focus and stoicism. Steve Carell perfectly captures Riggs as showman and court jester.
