Waterford freshman Dyjak wins Class S 500 free state title

New Haven — Waterford freshman Ella Dyjak captured the 500-yard freestyle during the CIAC Class S swimming and diving championships on Tuesday night at Southern Connecticut State University.

Dyjak's winning time was 5 minutes, 13.94 seconds. She also placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:55.84) to help the Lancers finish seventh in the team standings with 303 points. Weston won the team title 808 points and Ledyard wound up 10th with 184 points.

Also helping Waterford to the strong finish was Elyse Gathy, who placed fifth in the 500 free (5:31.18) and eighth in the 100 backstroke (1:04.11), while Sophia Podeszwa placed fourth in the diving competition held last week with 377.85 points.

Waterford also placed in two relay events. The 100 freestyle relay team of Dyjak, Podeszwa, Jayne Darras and Zora LaBonte was fifth in 1:48.32 and the 400 free relay team of Gathy, Darras, Dyjak and Megan Wyatt finished sixth in 4:00.28.

Olivia Strelevitz had a big night for Ledyard. The junior had a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 freestyle (54.38) and 100 backstroke (1:00.34). Teammate Madeline Johanson added a seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.78) while Stonington's Hope Sowle also reached the championship race and finished seventh in the 100 back (1:03.98).

Women's basketball

• Tatyana LaFrance Boyce had 13 points, 13 rebounds, eight steals and five assists as Avery Point beat Quinsigamond 74-17 in a NJCAA Region 21 game. Edona Thaqi scored 14 and Egypt Santos had 13 rebounds for the Pointers (4-1, 2-0).

• Former All-American Rebecca Lobo will be honored in a pregame ceremony prior to No. 1 UConn's home opener against No. 20 California on Friday at Gampel Pavilion. Lobo became the first women's basketball player to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame earlier this year and a banner commemorating that moment will be unveiled prior to the 7 p.m. tip.

Men's basketball

• Jacee Hamelin scored 27 points, leading Avery Point to a 73-68 win over Quinsigamond. Nick Fresch had 13 points and 16 rebounds, Elijah Malboeuf-Boyd had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Steven Fletcher scored 15 for the Pointers.

NFA's Hopkins-Terrell honored

• Sue Hopkins-Terrill, a former Norwich Free Academy athlete and its longtime gymnastics coach, was recently inducted into the Northeast Women's Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Newton, Mass. The honor recognizes Hopkins-Terrell's contributions to support and advance girls and women in sports in six New England states.

Hopkins-Terrell has coached gymnastics and track and field at NFA and has worked in the physical education department since 1994. She guided NFA to seven straight state champions and three New England titles from 1995-2002 when the Wildcats went 91-1 in dual competition.

Women's cross country

• Coast Guard freshman Kaitlyn Mooney was named New England Regional Athlete of the Year after winning the New England Division III cross country championship last Saturday in Gorham, Maine. Mooney finished in 20 minutes, 22 seconds, breaking her own school record.
