Waterford fresh­man Dy­jak wins Class S 500 free state ti­tle

New Haven — Waterford fresh­man Ella Dy­jak cap­tured the 500-yard freestyle dur­ing the CIAC Class S swimming and div­ing cham­pi­onships on Tues­day night at South­ern Con­necti­cut State Univer­sity.

Dy­jak's win­ning time was 5 min­utes, 13.94 sec­onds. She also placed sec­ond in the 200 freestyle (1:55.84) to help the Lancers fin­ish sev­enth in the team stand­ings with 303 points. We­ston won the team ti­tle 808 points and Led­yard wound up 10th with 184 points.

Also help­ing Waterford to the strong fin­ish was El­yse Gathy, who placed fifth in the 500 free (5:31.18) and eighth in the 100 back­stroke (1:04.11), while Sophia Podeszwa placed fourth in the div­ing com­pe­ti­tion held last week with 377.85 points.

Waterford also placed in two re­lay events. The 100 freestyle re­lay team of Dy­jak, Podeszwa, Jayne Dar­ras and Zora LaBonte was fifth in 1:48.32 and the 400 free re­lay team of Gathy, Dar­ras, Dy­jak and Megan Wy­att fin­ished sixth in 4:00.28.

Olivia Strele­vitz had a big night for Led­yard. The ju­nior had a pair of sec­ond-place fin­ishes in the 100 freestyle (54.38) and 100 back­stroke (1:00.34). Team­mate Made­line Jo­han­son added a sev­enth in the 100 breast­stroke (1:12.78) while Ston­ing­ton's Hope Sowle also reached the cham­pi­onship race and fin­ished sev­enth in the 100 back (1:03.98).

Women's bas­ket­ball

• Tatyana LaFrance Boyce had 13 points, 13 re­bounds, eight steals and five as­sists as Avery Point beat Quin­sig­a­mond 74-17 in a NJCAA Re­gion 21 game. Edona Thaqi scored 14 and Egypt San­tos had 13 re­bounds for the Point­ers (4-1, 2-0).

• For­mer All-Amer­i­can Re­becca Lobo will be hon­ored in a pregame cer­e­mony prior to No. 1 UConn's home opener against No. 20 Cal­i­for­nia on Fri­day at Gam­pel Pavil­ion. Lobo be­came the first women's bas­ket­ball player to be in­ducted into the Nai­smith Me­mo­rial Bas­ket­ball Hall of Fame ear­lier this year and a ban­ner com­mem­o­rat­ing that mo­ment will be un­veiled prior to the 7 p.m. tip.

Men's bas­ket­ball

• Jacee Hamelin scored 27 points, lead­ing Avery Point to a 73-68 win over Quin­sig­a­mond. Nick Fresch had 13 points and 16 re­bounds, Eli­jah Mal­boeuf-Boyd had 12 points and 11 re­bounds and Steven Fletcher scored 15 for the Point­ers.

NFA's Hop­kins-Ter­rell hon­ored

• Sue Hop­kins-Ter­rill, a for­mer Nor­wich Free Academy ath­lete and its long­time gym­nas­tics coach, was re­cently in­ducted into the North­east Women's Hall of Fame dur­ing a cer­e­mony in New­ton, Mass. The honor rec­og­nizes Hop­kins-Ter­rell's con­tri­bu­tions to sup­port and ad­vance girls and women in sports in six New Eng­land states.

Hop­kins-Ter­rell has coached gym­nas­tics and track and field at NFA and has worked in the phys­i­cal ed­u­ca­tion de­part­ment since 1994. She guided NFA to seven straight state cham­pi­ons and three New Eng­land ti­tles from 1995-2002 when the Wild­cats went 91-1 in dual com­pe­ti­tion.

Women's cross coun­try

• Coast Guard fresh­man Kait­lyn Mooney was named New Eng­land Re­gional Ath­lete of the Year af­ter win­ning the New Eng­land Di­vi­sion III cross coun­try cham­pi­onship last Satur­day in Gorham, Maine. Mooney fin­ished in 20 min­utes, 22 sec­onds, break­ing her own school record.
