New London house fire destroys two bedrooms, kills family dog

New London — A Monday evening fire at 34 Walden Ave. destroyed two third-floor bedrooms and left a family dog dead, Fire Marshal Vern Skau said Tuesday.

Skau said the 6:30 p.m. blaze displaced eight people, one of whom was a child. A resident of the home found smoke on the third floor after detectors on the other floors began sounding.

Skau said the third floor, which he described as a finished attic, did not have a smoke detector. That allowed the blaze to get a head start on firefighters, who knocked it down within about 15 minutes.

Skau said the first two floors had only minor smoke damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Records show the property belongs to Fedeline Dumeslo.
