Stonington's Smith fourth after Day 1 on CIAC decathlon

Manchester — Stonington's Shane Smith sits in fourth place after Day 1 of the CIAC boys' decathlon championsh­ip Tuesday.

Smith has 2,886 points after the first five events (the final five will be contested on Wednesday), trailing leader Tylor Seamans of Lyman Hall with 3,111. Fitch's Ethan Alves is 31st (2,370) and teammate Nick Luther is 41st (2,163).

Smith finished the 100-meter dash in 12.21 seconds, the 400 (55.36), the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches), the long jump (18-10.50) and the shot put (40-8.75) while Alves ran 12.38 in the 100, 58.81 in the 400, cleared 5-4.25 in the high jump, went 17-1.25 in the long jump and his best throw in the shot was 29-6.75. Luther ran 12.94 in the 100 and 59.59 in the 400 while clearing 5-0.25 in the high jump, going 16-10.5 in the long jump and 30-9 in the shot.

In the girls' heptathlon, Griswold's Kalli'Ana Botelho is the leader with 2,717 points after the Day 1 while Montville's Lauren Ross is seventh (2,019), Stonington's Kaleigh Bolduc 20th (1,816) and Montville's Sheyenne Gillis is 44th (1,622). Ross ran 29.16 in the 200, 16.99 in the 100 hurdles, cleared 4-6.25 in the high jump and went 25-8.25 in the shot put. Bolduc went 29.79 in the 200, 17.20 in the 100 hurdles, 4-2.25 in the high jump and 24-0.25 in the shot while Gillis went 30.86 in the 200, 19.27 in the 100 hurdles, 4-2.25 in the high jump and 28-5.5 in the shot.

The CIAC girls' 2,000 steeplecha­se and hammer throw champions were also crowned. Guilford's Jacqueline Guerra won the steeplecha­se in 7:16.97 with East Lyme's Alicia Lan 39th (8:41.34) and teammate Phoebe Provencher 44th (9:00.39). Southingto­n's Amanda Howe won the hammer with a throw of 142-11 with East Lyme's Jamie Foster eighth (1145) and teammate Savannah Hunter 27th (69-7).

American Legion Zone VI

• Andre Jose pitched a four-hitter as Willimanti­c defeated Niantic 2-0 in the season opener for both. Willimanti­c scored a pair of unearned runs off Niantic starter Ryan Kane in the third. Kane allowed only five hits while Matt Malcom had two of Niantic's four hits.

• Robert Parra scattered four hits over six innings as New London defeated Ledyard/ Pawcatuck 5-2. Nate Whipple pitched the seventh and struck out two with two runners on base. Hendrik Khoury scored twice and drove in a run for New London and Connor McCrea had two RBI. Noah Smith had two hits and scored both runs for Ledyard/Pawcatuck.

District 10 LL (11-12) softball

• East Lyme defeated Ledyard 16-5 as Ava Roach went 3-for-4 with a double, Ava Roth, Lindsay Todd and Maddie Pfanner each had doubles and winning pitcher Abby Robinson struck out three over four innings. Chloe Erno's single helped Ledyard score four runs in the first.

• Waterford defeated Salem/ Bozrah 15-1 as winning pitcher Anna Dziecinny had six strikeouts and also had a hit and scored twice. Sam San Juan went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs for Waterford while Isabella Correa, Melanie Martin and Zoe Zito each added extra-base hits. Lauren Pflugiel and Mia Williamson had hits for Salem/Bozrah.

• Groton/Mystic defeated Pawcatuck 13-1 as Katie Tuohy pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and Grace Jenkins and Sydney Lyon had three hits apiece. Emily Fulling had an RBI single for Pawcatuck.

Sportsman of the Year

• John "Jay" Cole, who has been a coach and mentor of youth activities at the Niantic Sportsmen's Club for more than 21 years, has been named Sportsman of the Year by the New London-Windham Country League of Sportsmen's Clubs.

Cole, who taught at Morgan School, will be honored during the group's annual dinner on Saturday at the Niantic club. During his career as a Niantic volunteer Cole has guided more than 300 young men and women and received numerous awards
