new york» Joe Lock­hart, once a press sec­re­tary for for­mer Pres­i­dent Bill Clin­ton, will join the NFL as the league’s ex­ec­u­tive vice pres­i­dent of com­mu­ni­ca­tions.

The league also an­nounced Tues­day that Cyn­thia Ho­gan has been pro­moted to ex­ec­u­tive vice pres­i­dent of pub­lic pol­icy and govern­ment affairs.

Lock­hart joins the NFL from a Wash­ing­ton, D.C.-based com­mu­ni­ca­tions and govern­ment affairs firm he co-founded. He was Clin­ton’s press sec­re­tary from 1998-2000, and also an ad­viser and press sec­re­tary to sev­eral pres­i­den­tial cam­paigns over two decades.

Ho­gan was hired by the NFL in 2014 af­ter four years as deputy as­sis­tant coun­sel in the Obama ad­min­is­tra­tion.

Pack­ers fire as­sis­tants

B green bay, wis.» The Pack­ers fired run­ning backs coach Sam Gash and tight ends coach Jerry Fon­tenot af­ter a chal­leng­ing sea­son for the of­fense.

Gash was with the team for two sea­sons. Ed­die Lacy ran for more than 1,100 yards in 2014 but gained just 758 this year on 187 car­ries. McCarthy said that Lacy did not have a good off­sea­son last year and it car­ried over.

Schwartz to Ea­gles

B philadel­phia» The Ea­gles hired for­mer Lions coach Jim Schwartz to be their de­fen­sive co­or­di­na­tor.

Schwartz was the first as­sis­tant brought in by new head coach Doug Ped­er­son.


The Steel­ers signed of­fen­sive line­man Chris Hub­bard and full­back Roo­sevelt Nix to oneyear con­tract ex­ten­sions.
