We’ll pass on this bill, thanks

The Denver Post - - NEWS -

Sen. Mike Merrifield, D-Colorado Springs, thinks he has an answer to those times when you find yourself stuck on a mountain pass behind a slowmoving vehicle whose driver seems indifferent to the frustration he is causing.

Merrifield’s solution: Pass a law that prohibits a driver from impeding more than five vehicles “following immediately behind” and requires the driver to “pull off the road where it is safe and legal to do so and let the others pass.” That’s what Senate Bill 18 says, which Merrifield is sponsoring.

Maybe SB 18 would help, but we’re skeptical. Sometimes people don’t pull over because they fear losing what little momentum they have. And sometimes they don’t because they’re rude and don’t care. Would they care more if they faced a very small risk of being fined? Seems unlikely.

And we can hear the excuses already, beginning with, “But officer, how was I supposed to know there were so many cars behind me on this winding road?”
