LEID TO HEAD NATIONAL WESTERN PLAN
Denver MayorMichael Hancock created a new office Tuesday to launch the NationalWestern Center Project.
At the same time, his administration is preparing to issue bonds that will raise $ 200 million for the first stage.
The mayor appointed Kelly Leid, the executive director of the city’s North Denver Cornerstone Collaborative office for nearly three years, to head the new Office of the National Western Center.
He has spearheaded the $ 856 million project through several milestones, including winning city voters’ approval in November for tourist tax extensions that will pay for the largest portion.
Three hospitalized after fire at mobile home.
Three people have been taken to a hospital for injuries suffered in a fire Tuesday at a mobile home in Adams County, said Sgt. JimMorgen, a sheriff’s spokesman.
At least one suffered smoke inhalation, Morgen said.
The Adams County Fire District responded to the fire at 12: 50 p. m. at a mobile home park in the 1600 block of East 78th Avenue, east ofWashington Street.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
Police seek suspect in fatal shooting.
Denver police are asking for the public’s help in identifying those responsible for a shooting that left a 29year- old man dead Saturday night.
MetroDenver Crime Stoppers are offering up to a $ 2,000 reward for information in the case.
Varnell Jenkins was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting, near the intersection of Albrook Drive and Peoria Street. The medical examiner’s office said he died of multiple gunshot wounds and that his manner of death was homicide.
Police said the shooting happened after an altercation between two groups broke out on the south end of a nearby shopping center and moved north toward an RTD park- n- Ride.
Nate Currey, RTD spokesman, said Jenkins was shot about 20 feet from a bus around 5: 30 p. m. Jenkins, who was alone, tried to crawl back toward the bus after he was shot.

Zoo mourns loss of orangutan. The Denver
Zoo is mourning the death of its 48- year- old Sumatran orangutan. Sally is remembered for loving to comb her beard and paint on canvas. The zoo says the median life span of Sumatran orangutans in zoos is 28.2 years.
Sally was born in December 1967 at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs and was moved to Denver Zoo inMay 1996 from the Albuquerque Biological Park, the zoo said.
Pedestrian killed by car in parking lot B
lakewood » A pedestrian was killed Tuesday when a driver hit him in aWalmart parking lot, police said.
The incident happened at about 2: 05 p. m. at aWalmart store at 440Wadsworth Blvd., according to Lakewood police.
The driver of a four- door sedan hit the pedestrian, a middle- aged man, then hit theWalmart building. Police described the driver as an elderly man. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he died.
