win­ston- salem, n. c. Dar­ius Thomp­son banked in a 3- poin­ter at the buzzer to give No. 11 Vir­ginia a 72- 71 vic­tory overWake For­est on Tues­day night.

“I just tried to get a foul, and threw it,” Thomp­son said. “And it hap­pened to go off the back­board.”

Mal­colm Brog­don scored 28 points and An­thony Gill added 17 for the Cava­liers. The league’s top 3- point shoot­ing team shook off a mis­er­able night on the perime­ter, hit­ting four 3s in the fi­nal minute to pull out a most un­likely win.

Bryant Craw­ford scored 18 of his 22 points in the se­cond half and Devin Thomas added 19 for the De­mon Dea­cons, who blew a 10- point lead with 90 sec­onds left. Craw­ford missed one of two free throws with 4.0 sec­onds left to set up Vir­ginia’s last chance. Marvelle Har­ris scored 25 points, and Fresno State erased a big night from Josh Adams with a 71- 60 vic­tory overWy­oming.
