Game Plan

The Denver Post - - SPORTS -

When the Broncos run

Denver’s yards per carry average in the four games since C.J. Anderson was placed on injured reserve? 2.3 vs. San Diego, 2.8 at Oakland, 2.8 at New Orleans, 3.3 vs. Kansas City. Devontae Booker and Kapri Bibbs have hit holes occasionally, but are getting engulfed at the line of scrimmage more often than not. Edge: Jaguars

When the Jaguars run

A Jacksonville running back hasn’t reached 45 rushing yards over the last four games. Jacksonville was hopeful running backs Chris Ivory and T.J. Yeldon would take the pressure off Blake Bortles having to throw so often, but that hasn’t happened this season. Bortles is a running threat. Ivory is out. The Broncos have struggled to stop the run all season, ranking 27th in the NFL, but they allowed only 83 rushing yards last week against Kansas City. Edge: Broncos

When the Broncos pass

Denver had its best passing game of the season against Kansas City with Trevor Siemian throwing for a season-high 368 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. But now rookie Paxton Lynch will get his second start and Denver’s offense will likely simplify to quick reads. The Jaguars’ third-ranked pass defense is the strength of their team, primarily because of their pass rush and rookie cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who has been outstanding. Edge: Jaguars

When the Jaguars pass

Bortles has regressed in year three after a promising second season. The talent on offense is there, particularly at receiver, to challenge opponents down the field more. The Broncos have allowed the NFL’s fewest passing yards and have the most sacks. This is the most slanted matchup of the game. Edge: Broncos

Special teams

The Broncos typically are strong in this area, but they had their worst game of the season against Kansas City. Two muffed punts, a free kick return for a touchdown and a missed long field goal were the Broncos’ downfall. It’ll be interesting to see if Jordan Norwood remains the punt returner after his gaffes against KC. Neither team has an ultra-dynamic returner. Jacksonville has a consistent punter and kicker. Edge: Jaguars

Jacksonville quarterback Blake Bortles is a running threat, but hasn’t lived up to expectations passing.
