Holiday Bourbon Old Fashioned

The Denver Post - - LIFE & CULTURE -

The Old Fashioned: Well, OK, this one actually doesn’t have a holiday twist at all because, well, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Skrbina, who said he has been bartending for 20 years, supplied little droplets of knowledge with each drink that will be fun to share with your guests. The Old Fashioned was originally made with sugar, water, bitters, lemon peel and gin, he said. That’s right, gin. This recipe, however, is how everyone knows this popular drink these days: with bourbon. The bourbon will warm your body right up from the core, making it the perfect cold-weather cocktail. Ingredients 2 ounces bourbon 1 sugar cube 1 orange slice 1 cherry seltzer water bitters (ingredients without amounts are dashes or splashes to taste) Directions

Muddle the fruit and sugar cubes with a splash of seltzer to release the flavors. If you don’t have a muddler at home, try the back end of a wooden spoon. Add in your bourbon and then some ice.

Food pairing option: The Palm paired this with a tenderloin crostini with microgreens and atomic horseradish sauce because bourbon and beef are a classic pairing that you can’t go wrong with.

This old fashioned is a classic that will warm you from the inside; what else could you want?
