The Colorado Rockies and Ian Desmond agreed to a five-year, $70 mil­lion con­tract Wed­nes­day. Here is a snapshot of Desmond: Basics: Age 31, 6-foot-3, 215 pounds Po­si­tions: Has played short­stop (Wash­ing­ton) and out­field (Texas) over eight sea­sons. Rockies plan to play him pri­mar­ily at first base. Key stats: .267 bat­ting av­er­age / .316 on-base per­cent­age / .427 slug­ging per­cent­age ca­reer splits with 132 home runs. In 2016 with Texas, had a .285/.335/.446 bat­ting line with 22 homers and 21 stolen bases. Hon­ors: All-star in 2012 with Wash­ing­ton, bat­ting .292 with 25 home runs and 73 RBIs. Strengths: Ath­letic, ver­sa­tile, durable player who’s con­sid­ered an ex­cel­lent baserun­ner and ex­cel­lent team­mate. Weak­nesses: Has not played first base. Hit just .237/.283/.347 in the sec­ond half of last sea­son. Hit .330 at home with the Rangers, but just .241 on the road. Strikes out a lot and sel­dom draws a walk.
