Playing the field
The Colorado Rockies and Ian Desmond agreed to a five-year, $70 million contract Wednesday. Here is a snapshot of Desmond: Basics: Age 31, 6-foot-3, 215 pounds Positions: Has played shortstop (Washington) and outfield (Texas) over eight seasons. Rockies plan to play him primarily at first base. Key stats: .267 batting average / .316 on-base percentage / .427 slugging percentage career splits with 132 home runs. In 2016 with Texas, had a .285/.335/.446 batting line with 22 homers and 21 stolen bases. Honors: All-star in 2012 with Washington, batting .292 with 25 home runs and 73 RBIs. Strengths: Athletic, versatile, durable player who’s considered an excellent baserunner and excellent teammate. Weaknesses: Has not played first base. Hit just .237/.283/.347 in the second half of last season. Hit .330 at home with the Rangers, but just .241 on the road. Strikes out a lot and seldom draws a walk.
