Santa is go­ing vir­tual as malls look for new ways to coax shop­pers through their doors over the hol­i­days. About 40 U.S. malls have opted for high-tech en­ter­tain­ment op­tions like vir­tual sleigh rides and pro­grams that can take a user’s face from a selfie and put it on a danc­ing elf. The dis­plays are in­tended to of­fer an in-per­son ex­pe­ri­ence that on­line re­tail­ers like Ama­zon can’t match. Most of the malls say peo­ple can walk through the dis­plays with­out buy­ing any­thing, and a photo with Santa costs around $30, the same as other malls.
