16 HORSES DIE IN BRIGHTON BARN FIRE

The Denver Post - - NEWS - By Tom McGhee

Firefighters say 16 horses died early Tuesday when a barn in Brighton went up in flames that investigators believe started from a heat source.

Natalie Ridderbos, Brighton fire spokeswoman, said investigators have determined the fire started in the area where a refrigerator and light were housed, but the exact cause remains under investigation.

The barn in the 14800 block of Powhatan Road was engulfed in flames when Brighton Fire Rescue District firefighters arrived shortly after 1 a.m. At 6:20 a.m., crews were still putting out hot spots. Members of the Hudson and Bennett fire departments also helped fight the blaze.

Firefighters believe the barn serves as a boarding facility. An owner who was on the scene was “very distraught,” Ridderbos said.
