B cleve­land» A state ap­peals court in Cleve­land ruled that the widow of a for­mer Notre Dame foot­ball player can pro­ceed with claims in a law­suit that said her hus­band was dis­abled by and ul­ti­mately died from con­cus­sion-re­lated head in­juries suf­fered dur­ing his col­lege ca­reer in the 1970s.

Tem­ple hires Collins.

Florida de­fen­sive co­or­di­na­tor Geoff Collins was named the new head foot­ball coach at Tem­ple.

Ra­dio an­a­lyst fired

B win­ston-salem, n.c.» Wake For­est fired Tommy El­rod, a for­mer as­sis­tant coach-turned­broad­caster who the school said at­tempted to leak foot­ball game plans to op­po­nents for three years.

The school an­nounced the find­ings of a nearly month­long in­ter­nal in­ves­ti­ga­tion that started af­ter doc­u­ments re­lated to the team’s game plan for the Louisville game were dis­cov­ered at the Car­di­nals’ sta­dium.

El­rod killed in crash

B chan­dler, okla.» James “Jimbo” El­rod, an All-Amer­ica de­fen­sive end who played on Ok­la­homa’s 1974 and 1975 na­tional cham­pi­onship teams, died in a car wreck, the Ok­la­homa High­way Pa­trol said. He was 62. The As­so­ci­ated Press
