A look at the fed­eral govern­ment guide­lines for poverty lev­els, which are used to de­ter­mine el­i­gi­bil­ity for cer­tain ben­e­fits and as­sis­tance:

• $11,880 for in­di­vid­u­als

• $16,020 for a fam­ily of 2

• $20,160 for a fam­ily of 3

• $24,300 for a fam­ily of 4

The govern­ment mea­sure of poverty is the same for the 48 con­tigu­ous states and District of Columbia -- whether you live in north­ern Cal­i­for­nia or ru­ral Arkansas. The in­come lev­els at which peo­ple are con­sid­ered im­pov­er­ished are slightly higher in Alaska and Hawaii.
