Finding balance on opioids

The Denver Post - - PERSPECTIVE - Re: Wayne Buehrer,

Thank you, John Ingold, for reporting on an important issue. Doctors need to find a balance between the legitimate use of opioids for chronic pain treatment and the problem of opioid abuse. Simply refusing to prescribe opioids is, in my opinion, a dereliction of the doctor’s responsibility to treat the patient with the best tools available. The opioid abuse epidemic is real, but doctors should be able to stand up for what is right for their patients without fear of retribution from regulatory agencies. New guidelines that give them this option, plus better training for doctors in chronic pain management, would be steps in the right direction.
