A rum deal

Cuba is hop­ing the Czech Repub­lic sees barter as a bet­ter way to re­claim its debts than cash. Cuban au­thor­i­ties have pro­posed pay­ing back $276 mil­lion owed to the Czechs with its trade­mark rum. The debt goes back to a time when both coun­tries were part of the com­mu­nist bloc. A spokesman for the Czech Fi­nance Min­istry said his coun­try still prefers that the debt be at least partly paid back in cash.
