FOR­MER SHER­IFF MAKETA PLEADS NOT GUILTY

colorado springs» For­mer El Paso County Sher­iff Terry Maketa pleaded not guilty Mon­day in a cor­rup­tion case. His trial, ex­pected to last two weeks, is sched­uled for May 31.

Maketa, along with two for­mer deputies, was in court to de­cide on the next steps af­ter a judge re­jected their at­tempts to have in­dict­ments against the trio thrown out.

Maketa, for­mer Un­der­sh­er­iff Paula Pres­ley and for­mer sher­iff ’s Cmdr. Juan “John” San Agustin were in­dicted in May on a range of cor­rup­tion charges, in­clud­ing or­der­ing the wrong­ful jail­ing of a woman who lodged a do­mes­tic abuse claim against a for­mer sher­iff ’s deputy.
