Gender-neutral rule for single-stall restrooms wins Denver’s OK. The
Denver City Council on Monday night approved amendments to the building code that include a streamlined rule for small bathrooms in businesses and other places open to the public.
Single-stall bathrooms that had required distinct labeling as “men’s” or “women’s” will become gender-neutral, with new signage for existing restrooms required by May 1, 2018. Multiple-stall restrooms still would be gender-specific.
The council approved the change 11-0.
Supporters portrayed the new rule as a matter of ensuring that men and women don’t face differing waits in restaurants and bars that have more than one single-stall bathroom.
