Man who was driv­ing high is sen­tenced to 10 months in jail for fa­tal crash

grand junc­tion» A Grand Junc­tion man has been sen­tenced to 10 months in jail for driv­ing while high on mar­i­juana and caus­ing a fa­tal crash.

The Daily Sen­tinel re­ports that 27-year-old Jessy Wayne McEl­roy was con­victed of careless driv­ing re­sult­ing in death and driv­ing while abil­ity im­paired for the July 2015 crash that killed 60-year-old mo­tor­cy­clist Gary Wil­lis.

McEl­roy has been or­dered to serve two years of pro­ba­tion af­ter his jail sen­tence.

He apol­o­gized to Wil­lis’ fam­ily be­fore his sen­tence was an­nounced, say­ing that he is “ready to take full re­spon­si­bil­ity for my bad choices.”

Wil­lis’ widow, Kim Wil­lis, cried when she ad­dressed Mesa County District Judge Va­le­ria Ro­bi­son and said she hoped the last thing McEl­roy saw be­fore sleep­ing was the im­age of her dead hus­band.
