Standoff over trespassing ends peacefully with couple’s surrender
EL PASO COUNTY» A man who barricaded himself in a trailer Tuesday morning in northern El Paso County surrendered after an hours-long standoff with SWAT officers.
About 8:10 a.m., a caretaker called authorities after noticing footprints to a fifth-wheel trailer on the 13800 block of Colorado 83, said Natalie Sosa, a spokeswoman for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
When deputies arrived, a man and a woman with no connection to the property had locked themselves in the trailer, Sosa said.
The woman surrendered after 9 a.m., but the man did not emerge from the trailer until about 2:30 p.m.
“He was refusing to come out of the trailer, so we never know what that person’s frame of mind is — why they’re in the trailer to begin with, why they’re on this property — so this is a precaution,” Sosa said about the SWAT team’s involvement.
Neither the man’s name nor the woman’s has been released. Sosa did not say if either has been arrested. The original call the sheriff’s office responded to was for criminal trespass, but it’s unclear what charges they might face.
