NEWTON OUT FOR MINICAMP AFTER SURGERY

The Denver Post - - SPORTS -

charlotte, n.c.» Panthers quarterback Cam Newton’s offseason “sabbatical” is going to be a little longer than expected.

Newton will undergo surgery on March 30 to repair a partially torn rotator cuff in his right throwing shoulder, according to team spokesman Steve Drummond. Drummond said Tuesday Newton will miss minicamp and organized team activities, but is expected to be ready for the start of training camp in late July.

The 27-year-old Newton injured his shoulder in Week 14 of last season against the Chargers. He finished the game — and the season— for Carolina without missing a snap. The Panthers hoped rest and rehabilitation would solve the problem, but ultimately it was determined the 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player needed surgery.

Newton was unavailable for comment.

The six-year NFL veteran has been rehabbing the shoulder in Atlanta.

A tired-looking Newton said after Carolina’s final regular season game, which ended a 6-10 season, that the team needed a “sabbatical” from football after a run of three straight NFC South championships.

Lynch’s return on hold.

Marshawn Lynch’s agent said his client misses football, but they haven’t discussed recent reports that Lynch’s hometown Raiders want him to play for them in 2017.

Doug Hendrickson said in an interview a San Francisco radio station that Lynch has been in Canada. Hendrickson is scheduled to meet with the retired running back this week.

Last week, ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Josina Anderson reported the Raiders are strongly considering acquiring Lynch, either through trade or by his release.

For now, Oakland would have to trade for Lynch because his NFL rights remain the property of the Seahawks since has two years remaining on his contract with them.
