Snooze’s Summer Harvest Benedict
Regular readers may have noticed this, but I am not one to order a quinoa cake for breakfast (or any other time of day, for that matter). It’s not that I’m completely quinoa-averse, it’s just that pretty much every other carb on the planet tastes better, and so I’m apt to stick to those better-tasting carbs.
So you know it wasn’t me who ordered the Summer Harvest Benedict, with its parmesan pesto quinoa cakes in place of the usual English muffin, at the brand-new Snooze in Westminster. And don’t pretend you’re all virtuous. You, like me, are getting the over-the-top, day’s-worth-of-calories pancakes at Snooze, not the quinoa. (Side note: Even though we were there for a soft opening before it opened to the public, we still had to wait for a table. Oh, Snooze, you capricious little breakfast sprite.)
It was my more healthconscious dining companion who chose the quinoa Benny and offered me half. I was skeptical, especially seeing the Caprese salad thrown down in the middle of it.
As you’ve probably already guessed by the spoiler alert name of this column, it was darned good.
The balsamic reduction drizzled over the eggs — and poured more generously over the tomatoes and mozzarella chunks — cut the richness of the cream cheese hollandaise. (Yes, cream cheese hollandaise. Because you know ultra-indulgent Snooze isn’t pairing quinoa with bone-broth hollandaise.)
The dueling sauces made the dish, but the quinoa cakes were good as well. I don’t even think I’d prefer a muffin, biscuit or basic bread base; it was perfect as is.
I’m told that this is a special summer menu offering, and it may not even be available at all Snoozes. But if you’re up at the new one in Westminster and you can pry yourself from the peanut butter cup pancakes, order the quinoa.
Those are three words I never thought I’d say.
