OILERS SIGN CAPTAIN McDAVID TO 8-YEAR, $100 MILLION DEAL
EDMONTON, ALBERTA» The Oilers signed star captain Connor McDavid to an eightyear, $100 million deal.
McDavid led the NHL in scoring with 100 points last season, en route to winning the Hart Trophy as league MVP.
Drafted first overall by the Oilers in 2015, the 20-year-old McDavid has been the catalyst of Edmonton’s transformation from league bottom dweller to contender.
With McDavid leading the way, the Oilers reached the playoffs for the first time in a decade last season, eliminating San Jose before falling in seven games to Anaheim in the second round.
The deal has an average annual value of $12.5 million.

Zach Hyman signed a $10 million, four-year contract extension with the Maple Leafs.
The 25-year-old forward was set to become an unrestricted free agent after the upcoming season.
The former University of Michigan player had 10 goals and 18 assists in 82 regular-season games last season and added a goal and three assists in six playoff games.
Canadiens sign Galchenyuk.
MONTREAL» Alex Galchenyuk and the Canadiens avoided arbitration by agreeing to a three-year, $14.7 million contract.
The 23-year-old Galchenyuk was a restricted free agent.
Drafted third overall by Montreal in 2012, the American center had 17 goals and 27 assists in 61 games last season and added three assists in six playoff games. He has 89 goals and 115 assists in 336 career NHL games.
The Wild re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Zach Palmquist to a one-year, two-way contract. Palmquist will make $726,000 in the NHL and $70,000 in the AHL. . … The Rangers signed free-agent center David Desharnais to a one-year, $1 million contract. … The Islanders signed Swedish forward Sebastian Aho to a three-year entry level contract. … Goalie Reto Berra signed with the Ducks, returning to North America less than three months after agreeing to a three-year deal with Fribourg-Gotteron in his native Switzerland’s top league.
