ARMY VET GETS BRONZE STAR DECADES LATER
Doug Hendrickson, drafted to fight in the Vietnam War, on Saturday received a Bronze Star Medal for heroic action during the Tet Offensive in 1969.
Hendrickson, who lives in Denver, received the medal and several other honors from U.S. Rep. Ken Buck in a ceremony held in the backyard of a friend’s home in Severance.
After accepting his honors, Hendrickson, 70, shared his perspective of the Vietnam War. He cited a Veterans Affairs poll of Vietnam veterans, 71 percent of whom said they would go back to Vietnam and 66 percent would return knowing the result, he said.
“We understood very clearly it was a fight for freedom to keep away the tyranny of the North Vietnamese,” he said.
