ARMY VET GETS BRONZE STAR DECADES LATER

Doug Hen­drick­son, drafted to fight in the Viet­nam War, on Satur­day re­ceived a Bronze Star Medal for heroic ac­tion dur­ing the Tet Of­fen­sive in 1969.

Hen­drick­son, who lives in Den­ver, re­ceived the medal and sev­eral other hon­ors from U.S. Rep. Ken Buck in a cer­e­mony held in the back­yard of a friend’s home in Sev­er­ance.

Af­ter ac­cept­ing his hon­ors, Hen­drick­son, 70, shared his per­spec­tive of the Viet­nam War. He cited a Veter­ans Af­fairs poll of Viet­nam veter­ans, 71 per­cent of whom said they would go back to Viet­nam and 66 per­cent would re­turn know­ing the re­sult, he said.

“We un­der­stood very clearly it was a fight for free­dom to keep away the tyranny of the North Viet­namese,” he said.
