Re­cy­cled wa­ter: This is wa­ter that has moved through the city’s sewage treat­ment sys­tem. It’s cleaned to the drink­ing-wa­ter stan­dard of the 1980s but is con­sid­ered non­potable un­der cur­rent reg­u­la­tions.

Gray­wa­ter: This is wa­ter from such uses as show­ers and wash­ing ma­chines that has not moved through the sewer sys­tem. Colorado rules al­low its use in some cir­cum­stances. Pro­duced wa­ter: This is wa­ter that is churned up from oil and gas pro­duc­tion ac­tiv­i­ties that con­tains chem­i­cals.
