TRUMP HAD SECOND CONVERSATION WITH PUTIN
President Donald Trump had another, previously undisclosed conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin at a summit it Germany.
White House spokesman Sean Spicer and National Security Council spokesman Michael Anton confirmed that Trump and Putin spoke privately at a dinner for world leaders and their spouses at the Group of 20 summit in Hamburg, Germany. Anton would not specify the duration of the meeting. But he said the discussion was casual and should not be characterized as a meeting or even a less formal, but official, “pull-aside.”
Trump to nominate Huntsman as ambassador to Russia.
President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced his intention to nominate former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman to be U.S. ambassador to Russia.
If confirmed, the former 2012 GOP presidential candidate would take over a high-profile post amid ongoing investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and potential contacts between Russian officials and the Trump campaign.
Huntsman has twice served as an ambassador. He was the nation’s top diplomat to Singapore under President George H.W. Bush and served in that role in China under President Barack Obama before returning to the U.S. to run for president.
Saudi woman in miniskirt video arrested after outcry.
A Saudi woman has been arrested for defying the kingdom’s strict dress code by walking around in a miniskirt and crop top in a video that sparked public outrage.
The woman, whose name was not given, was detained by police in the capital, Riyadh, for wearing “immodest clothes” that contradicted the country’s conservative Islamic dress code, state media reported Tuesday.
The video sparked a Twitter hashtag that called for her arrest, with many saying she flagrantly disobeyed Saudi rules, which require all women living in the kingdom, including foreigners, to wear long, loose robes known as abayas in public.
First half of 2017 ranks second-hottest globally, behind 2016.
The first half of 2017 was the second-warmest on record for Earth, behind only last year.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced Tuesday Earth’s average temperature from January to June was 57.9 degrees. That’s 1.6 degrees warmer than the 20th century average. NOAA climate scientist Ahira Sanchez-Lugo says it is remarkable that 2017, without an El Niño so far, beat all but the super El Niño year of 2016. Record warmth was measured in much of Mexico, western Europe, eastern Russia, eastern Africa and eastern China.
Harvey Atkin, who played Morty in “Meatballs,” dies at 74.
Harvey Atkin, the Canadian actor who played the camp director Morty in “Meatballs,” has died after a battle with cancer. He was 74. Atkin appeared in more than 90 episodes of “Cagney & Lacey” as Sgt. Ronald Coleman, and he appeared frequently as Judge Alan Ridenour on “Law & Order.”
