Five from CU, CSU on watch lists

A com­bined five col­lege foot­ball play­ers from Colorado State and the Univer­sity of Colorado were named to na­tional pre­sea­son award watch lists Tues­day.

The Buffs placed Shay Fields and Devin Ross for the Bilet­nikoff Award, given an­nu­ally to the best re­ceiver in col­lege foot­ball, and Derek McCart­ney for the Wuerf­fel Tro­phy. The Wuerf­fel Tro­phy is awarded each to the FBS player who best com­bines com­mu­nity in­volve­ment with ath­letic and aca­demic achieve­ment.

Fields, who was an all-Pac-12 hon­or­able men­tion se­lec­tion a year ago, leads all re­turn­ing play­ers in the con­fer­ence with 1,929 ca­reer yards re­ceiv­ing. Ross led CU with 66 re­cep­tions as a ju­nior last sea­son and was also an al­lPac-12 hon­or­able men­tion se­lec­tion, record­ing five touch­down re­cep­tions in 2016. He and is tied for 15th in school his­tory in re­cep­tions (97) and 21st in yards re­ceiv­ing (1,113).

At CSU, Michael Gallup and of­fen­sive line­man Zack Golditch were also named to the Bilet­nikoff Award and Wuerf­fel Tro­phy watch lists, re­spec­tively.

In his first sea­son of Di­vi­sion I foot­ball last fall, Gallup was a first­team all-Moun­tain West per­former with 76 catches for 1,272 yards. He had 14 touch­downs, which ranked eighth in the NCAA.

Golditch, a Den­ver na­tive, has been an ac­tive vol­un­teer at hos­pi­tals in his home­town and at the Boys & Girls Club in Fort Collins. He re­cently trav­eled to Ja­maica to vol­un­teer with CSU’s “Green & Global Ini­tia­tive.” The se­nior has been a starter on the Rams’ of­fen­sive line for the last two years. Last sea­son, their O-line al­lowed just 1.08 sacks per game — 13th fewest in the FBS.
