Five from CU, CSU on watch lists
A combined five college football players from Colorado State and the University of Colorado were named to national preseason award watch lists Tuesday.
The Buffs placed Shay Fields and Devin Ross for the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to the best receiver in college football, and Derek McCartney for the Wuerffel Trophy. The Wuerffel Trophy is awarded each to the FBS player who best combines community involvement with athletic and academic achievement.
Fields, who was an all-Pac-12 honorable mention selection a year ago, leads all returning players in the conference with 1,929 career yards receiving. Ross led CU with 66 receptions as a junior last season and was also an allPac-12 honorable mention selection, recording five touchdown receptions in 2016. He and is tied for 15th in school history in receptions (97) and 21st in yards receiving (1,113).
At CSU, Michael Gallup and offensive lineman Zack Golditch were also named to the Biletnikoff Award and Wuerffel Trophy watch lists, respectively.
In his first season of Division I football last fall, Gallup was a firstteam all-Mountain West performer with 76 catches for 1,272 yards. He had 14 touchdowns, which ranked eighth in the NCAA.
Golditch, a Denver native, has been an active volunteer at hospitals in his hometown and at the Boys & Girls Club in Fort Collins. He recently traveled to Jamaica to volunteer with CSU’s “Green & Global Initiative.” The senior has been a starter on the Rams’ offensive line for the last two years. Last season, their O-line allowed just 1.08 sacks per game — 13th fewest in the FBS.
