Doughnuts and booze at Habit Doughnut Dispensary

The Denver Post - - FEATURES - By Allyson Reedy, The Denver Post By Allyson Reedy Habit Doughnut Dispensary doughnuts ($2.50 each): 1553 Platte St., Denver, 720-428-8565; habitdough; Sun.-Tues. 7 a.m.-10 p.m., Wed.-Thurs. 7 a.m.-11 p.m., Fri.-Sat. 7-12 a.m.

It’s not often that I take shots of lemon vodka with my doughnuts. It’s also not often that I’d be willing to pay $2.50 for a doughnut and $9 for a shot.

But when it’s pushing 100 degrees outside and you’re walking around the steaming concrete of downtown with two preschoolers, you do what you’ve gotta do. This is survival mode, people.

The doughnuts and spirits came from Habit Doughnut Dispensary (not that kind of dispensary). What the store purveyors intended, I think, was for the shots of alcohol to be injected into the doughnuts. That’s well and good for their mostly childless clientele, but for myself and my fellow mom that day, we opted to just take the liquor straight, thank you very much.

The doughnuts, although certainly expensive, were delicious. Most have a brioche dough base with different garnishings on top. I tried the chocolate ganache, the bruleed malted milk glaze and salted caramel toppings. They were all super rich, but not as rich as the onepound cinnamon rolls, which looked worth a trek back.

Just not on a 100-degree day with two preschoolers in tow.
