SEEN: Diamonds in the Rough fundraiser
Continuing a tradition set 18 years ago, the participant roster for Hyde Park Jewelers’ Diamonds in the Rough Charity Golf Classic reads like a Who’s Who in Sports, with a slew of other celebrities joining in this two-day event that raises money for some very worthy causes.
This year’s lineup included Matt Iseman, host of NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior”; former Denver Broncos Steve Atwater, DeMarcus Ware, Alfred Williams, Rod Bernstine, Tyrone Braxton and Joel Dreessen; former Colorado Rockies Garrett Atkins and Jason Hirsch; Walter Davis, whose 15 years in the National Basketball Association were spent with the Phoenix Suns, Denver Nuggets and Portland Trailblazers; University of Denver hockey coach Jim Montgomery; Indy Car driver Buzz Calkins; Kyle Quincey, a defenseman for the National Hockey League’s Minnesota Wild; New York Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield; agent Peter Schaffer; and Mullen High School grad Bo Scaife, whose career in the NFL included stints with the Tennessee Titans, Cincinnati Bengals and New England Patriots.
Also, actress/model Kim Alexis, whose image has graced 500 magazine covers; actor John Ashton; former University of Colorado Buffs Darian Hagan and Charles Johnson; and the Colorado Avalanche’s TV analyst Peter McNabb.
Alexis had lived in Boulder for several years following a divorce; she moved back to New York around this time last year.
Diamonds in the Rough began on July 16 with a dinner at Elway’s Cherry Creek and continued the following day with breakfast, followed by 18 holes of golf, cocktails, the Million Dollar Shootout and an awards ceremony at the prestigious Sanctuary Golf Course near Sedalia.
The golfers competed for some amazing prizes: a Schaffhausen IWC watch, his and hers Rolex watches, a Kwiat diamond pendant, a Breitling Colt Skyracer watch and a Laws Whiskey basket, just to name a few.
In the end, the event — chaired by media personalities Les Shapiro and Rich “G-Man” Goins — raised $200,000 for the Denver Health Foundation, the Global Down Syndrome Foundation and Girls, Inc. of Metro Denver.
A highlight of the dinner came when attorney Steve Farber was presented with the 2017 Diamonds in the Rough Humanitarian Award for his longstanding commitment to charitable causes.
Farber’s wife, Cindy, and sons Brad and Brent accompanied him to the dinner, joining a crowd that also included Gary Reece, president of Cancer League of Colorado; Carol and Larry Mizel; Susi and Rick Altman; Tracey and Jeff Muoio (he is chief operating officer for MasTec, one of the tournament’s sponsors); MorganStanley vice president Mitch Ryan and his wife, Danielle; and tournament director Nancy Lamb Thompson.
As hosts Michael and Shereen Pollak explained, “Diamonds in the Rough is a nonprofit foundation created by Hyde Park, Inc. to support local charities and individuals in their quest to become treasured gems. Treasured gems are those who are challenged and in need of support to attain brilliance not otherwise available to them.”
