Even as the deaths of 10 immigrants found in the back of a sweltering tractor-trailer in Texas captured international attention, the deaths of five others who drowned this week trying to get into the U.S. by swimming across the Rio Grande have largely gone unnoticed.

The latest death was discovered Thursday, by U.S. Border Patrol. The bodies of three people, all Guatemalan nationals, were recovered Tuesday. Another died at a hospital.

Officials say at least 15 people have attempted to cross the river in the same area this week. The number of deaths in that area is unusual. so far eight people have died there so far this fiscal year compared to three who died there last year.
