Nuggets unveil Nike uniform combos

The Denver Post - - SPORTS - By Nick Kosmider

Darrell Arthur rubbed the seams of his new uniform, fresh out of the box from Nike.

The new threads made him feel lighter, the Nuggets’ veteran forward insisted. And, apparently, more confident.

“We can be a contender, for sure,” Arthur said of the upcoming season that will coincide with the new, darker-blue uniforms. “Right up there with Golden State.”

It would probably take a new uniform with a Superman cape attached for the Nuggets, and most other Western Conference teams, to ascend to the level of the Warriors by next season.

But as the Nuggets aim to reach the postseason for the first time since 2013 while celebrating their previous 50 seasons, with the first nine in the ABA, perhaps a new look, which features a dominant navy blue hue with only a trim of the old baby blue schemes, couldn’t hurt.

“I saw the jerseys first and called dibs on this one,” Nuggets guard Gary Harris said of the “Icon Edition” navy uniform he modeled during a public reveal outside the Denver Performing Arts Complex. “I just like the navy blue and the way they accent it with the baby blue and the yellow.”

Arthur modeled the Nuggets’ new white or “Association” uniform, which is similar to previous iterations of the team’s home uniforms, only with darker blue trim and numbers.

Every team in the NBA is getting new uniforms this season as Nike takes over as the league’s official uniform and apparel provider. The Nuggets’ jerseys also feature a patch with the logo of Western Union, which last week announced a multiyear deal as the team’s first jersey sponsor. Among the details on the uniforms is a “5280” stitching on the bottom corner of the jersey and a pick-ax logo on the belt of the shorts.

The new jerseys will be available for fans to purchase beginning Sept. 29. The Nuggets will release two more jerseys at some point after the start of the season, though the team has been mum on the details of the upcoming

editions, which are labeled by Nike as the “Statement” and “City” editions.

“They are going to be pretty good. I like them,” Harris said. “I don’t know how much I’m al- lowed to say.”

Both Harris and Arthur repeatedly referred to the uniforms as lighter. Nike claims the uniforms wick sweat 30 percent faster than the previous models. Each uniform is made out of, in part, about 20 recycled plastic water bottles.

“I never thought I’d see the day,” Arthur said of the recycled component of the jersey. “But these jerseys are actually really nice. They are a lot lighter than last year’s jerseys. Especially when you start sweating, it’s like you have a weight vest on. That won’t be a problem with these.”
