WASHINGTON» The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the first digital pill that can track whether patients have taken their medicine.

The technology is intended to help prevent dangerous emergencies when patients don’t take their medication.

But the drugmaker must convince insurers to pay for the technology, which hasn’t been shown to improve patient’s medication compliance.
