East Lansing — Michigan State linebacker Tyriq Thompson was arrested for a misdemeanor noise violation after hosting a party at his East Lansing residence that police estimated was attended by 200 to 300 people.

According to a report from the East Lansing Police Department, officers decided to detain Thompson, whose name was redacted from the report, because of “lackluster” attempts to end the party after officers responded to complaints about the noise.

Police were called to the residence just before midnight on Sept. 1 and approached Thompson on the front lawn while estimating about 100 people were outside the house and loud music was playing. Thompson said it was his house. The officers suggested he turn off the loud music and ask his guests to leave.

The report said Thompson “disappeared for several minutes” and that while the music was turned off, people were not leaving the party. The report says that for the next hour officers struggled to assist Thompson to get people to leave and, while doing so, the music was turned back on.

After another 15 to 20 minutes, the report states it became obvious, based on Thompson’s “lackluster” efforts that the party had grown out of his control. Thompson was then advised by officers he would be placed under arrest for disorderly conduct, unlawful noise. He was taken to the East Lansing jail without incident. 54B District Court records show Thompson posted $200 bond and was released. He has a pretrial hearing set for Sept. 27.

After earning his first career start in the season-opener Aug. 31, the junior was not with the Spartans when they traveled to Arizona State last Saturday to take on the Sun Devils. At the time, coach Mark Dantonio did not offer any details on his absence.

During his weekly teleconference on Tuesday, Dantonio said Thompson had an issue but was back with the team.

“We left him at home because he got into a situation and I felt it was warranted that we leave him at home,” Dantonio said.

Thompson, a former standout at Detroit Martin Luther King, played in 12 games last season and had 11 tackles after recording six tackles in 11 games as a redshirt freshman in 2016. He had one tackle in the opener against Utah State.

Michigan State (1-1) is off this week and returns to action Sept. 22 when it opens Big Ten play at Indiana.
