Twins star Mauer calls it a career
Joe Mauer is retiring after 15 major league seasons, six All-Star games, three Gold Glove awards, three batting titles and 2,123 career hits, all with his hometown Minnesota Twins.
“Thank you, Minnesota Twins, and thank you, fans, for making my career as special and memorable as it was,” Mauer wrote in a full-page ad that will run Sunday in the Minneapolis Star Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press. “Because of you I can leave the game I love with a full and grateful heart.”

... A Spencer Littleson free throw with 8 seconds left was the margin of victory as Toledo defeated Oakland 87-86 at Rochester. Jaelan Sanford scored 30 for Toledo (1-0). Xavier Hill-Mais scored 30 for Oakland (1-1).
... Eastern Michigan’s women rallied from nine points down after the first quarter to top Cleveland State 69-63. Guard Courtnie Lewis’ 20 points led the Eagles (1-0).
... Wayne State’s women lost at home 71-51 to Findlay. Guard Nastassja Chambers led the Warriors (0-1) with 13 points. And the Detroit Mercy women fell to 1-1 with a 55-41 loss at Ohio State.
SOCCER: Marc Ybarra scored in the 21st minute and Michigan defeated Wisconsin 1-0 in a Big Ten semifinal at Westfield, Indiana. The Wolverines will face Indiana in the final at noon Sunday.
