Yourry Tapande of Dundalk won the Class 3A 300-meter dash state title on Tuesday at the state championship meet in Prince George’s County.

Tapande finished with a time of 35.55 to edge Franklin’s Miles Hollimon, who finished in 35.68.

The race results came in as the Eagle was going to press on Tuesday, and the meet had not finished by press time. More details to follow next week.

In Class 2A, Sparrows Point high jumper Briana Gamble had been chasing Hereford’s Alexandra Butz throughout the postseason, finishing second to her at the Baltimore County championships and the Class 2A Central region championships.

Gamble caught Butz on Monday at the Class 2A Maryland State championship meet at the Prince George’s County SportsPlex, but the gold medal eluded both athletes.

Beyonce Kelly of Harford tech won the Class 2A state high jump title by clearing 5-foot-6. Gamble and Butz tied for second with a height of 5-4.

Gamble and Butz both cleared 5-4 at the Baltimore County championships, but Butz won the title on the basis of fewer misses. They had an equal number of misses on Monday, with each jumper clearing 5-4 on her second at- tempt and missing all three attempts at 5-6.

Briana was the only local athlete to place at the Class 2A state championships. Her freshman sister, Samantha, also qualified for the state meet in the high jump, but didn’t advance to the finals.
