U-Haul to occupy former K-Mart
Self-storage coming to Colgate
U-Haul is in talks to take over the former Kmart building on North Point Boulevard in Colgate. If all goes according to plan, the building will become a selfstorage facility.
The Kmart, which opened in the 95,000-square-foot location in 1974, closed this past April.
The store is located in the North Point Mall shopping center, which was acquired by Pikesville-based America’s Realty LLC in July 2016 for $3.3 million.
The shopping center also includes a Family Dollar store, which opened last December, Niko’s Pizza, Mega Grocery and Marker, Advance Auto Parts and a Sudsville laundromat.
Representatives for America’s Realty were not available for immediate comment.
For her part, Donna Metlin, president of the Colgate Improvement Association, expressed disappointment in the news that U-Haul would be moving into the space once occupied by Kmart.
“This really doesn’t do anything for us,” she said, noting that she has been lobbying for a pharmacy to come to the area. Right now, she noted, Colgate does not have a pharmacy within walking distance of the community.
She is also disappointed that the property owner, Americas Realty, will not allow the association to use space on the parking lfor their annual Dumpster Day in October.
In years past, she explained, Kmart would allow the community group to host the event on their parking lot.
“Kmart was good to us,” she said, adding, “They were really part of the community.”
In a statement to the Eagle, U-Haul declined to provide details on the new location, noting that the deal is not yet final.
“At this point we are waiting to close on the property before we can offer a comment,” said spokesperson Andrea Batchelor.
A U-Haul Self Storage facility is slated to occupy the former Kmart in Colgate.
