Pointer softball to vie for county title
The Sparrows Point softball team rallied from a two-run deficit to defeat visiting Catonsville 5-4 last week and earn a spot in the Baltimore County championship game.
The Pointers (14-2) were to play Lansdowne (13-1) for the county title on Tuesday after The Eagle went to press.
The Vikings defeated the Pointers 3-2 in nine innings during the regular season. Lansdowne’s tying run that forced extra innings was helped by two wind-blown popups.
Sparrows Point will then enter the Class 1A North Regional playoffs as the top seed and heavy favorite to win the regional title.
The county championship game pits the top two finishers in Baltimoe County Division I. Behind Lansdowne, four teams had two losses: Sparrows Point, Catonsville, Eastern Tech and Towson.
The game between the Pointers and the Comets acted as an elimination game, giving the loser three losses.
Sparrows Point beat Eastern Tech during the regular season; the Mavericks beat Towson, and the Generals beat the Pointers.
The tie-breaker was run differential; Sparrows Point only gave up 38 runs during the regular season, while scoring 141.
The game against Catonsville on Thursday was scoreless after three innings. The Comets then took advantage of a Pointer error to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
Sparrows Point tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning as Savannah Hunter singled, Alyssa James walked and Sara Jensen advanced the runners with a groundout.
Hunter scored on a passed ball, and Megan Hamp singled to tie the game.
Alyssa Shiflett led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a triple over the right-fielder’s head, and scored on a groundout by Jaddah Foos.
Two walks and an error loaded the bases for Jessica Miller, who brought a run home with a bunt for a base hit.
Hamp drove in another run with a groundout.
The Pointers needed all of that three-run lead, as the first Catonsville batter singled and the next blasted a home run to right-center.
But Miller retired the next three batters to close out the game. She finished with six strikeouts and didn’t allow an earned run.
Sparrows Point ended the regular season with a 3-2 win over visiting Edgewood on Monday.
