A re­newed bat­tle was pre­vented, he later as­serted, by a tremen­dous hur­ri­cane that tore off the roofs of houses, as other build­ings were sim­ply knocked down by an un­prece­dented, two-hour-long wall of wa­ter; 30 Bri­tish sol­diers were buried in the rub­ble, as well as many Dis­trict res­i­dents.
