Dundalk historical society collecting funds for flags
Joe Stadler is on a mission. His goal — to cover Veterans Park and the median strip on Dundalk Avenue with as many American flags as possible in time for this year’s Veterans Day
Stadler, with the Dundalk-Patapsco Neck Historical Society, is coordinating Veteran’s Day Flags over Dundalk. The project aims to raise funds to purchase small American flags to be displayed in the week leading up to Nov. 11.
According to Stadler, he was inspired by seeing a display of more than 2,000 American flags along Putty Hill Road in Parkville on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
Seeing the potential for a similar project here in Dundalk, Stadler took the idea to the board of the historical society, which agreed to sponsor the project.
The aim is to honor veterans, boost patriotism and boost the community.
“It demonstrates a bit of pride in the community for Veterans Day,” Stadler noted.
The initial goal of the project was to raise $1,000. However, with just a few mentions in the historical society newsletter and the St. Helena Red Rocket community newsletter, the effort has already exceeded that goal to the tune of $1,600.
Now, Stadler has a new goal in mind.
“Wouldn’t it be nice if we could reach 3,000 flags?”
The requested donation is $10, though more is appreciated as well. Each flag costs just over a dollar, meaning that for each dollar raised, approximately one flag is purchased. All proceeds go toward purchasing flags.
Flags are 18” x 13”, mounted on a wooden stick.
Donations may be made in memoriam or in the name of an individual/couple/organization.
All contribution information is being collected for publication in a program booklet and/or an upcoming issue of the Dundalk Eagle.
Checks made out to DPNHS with memo note “Flag Project” may be mailed to the Dundalk-Patapsco Neck Historical Society, P.O. Box 21781, Dundalk, MD 21222. Cash or check will be accepted at the museum, located at 4 Center Place across from the Dundalk Post Office in the Dundalk Village Shopping Center.
The deadline for donating to the project is Monday, Oct. 1. Flags will be displayed in the week before Veterans Day on Nov. 11.
After the holiday, the flags will be collected and put out again for each year’s Veterans Day observance.
