July 2, 2020 The Dundalk Eagle Page 29 Wynne tabbed as new Sparrows Point girls soccer head coach So he’s not tempering his expectations. “I have a great coaching staff ready to get to work on state title number seven,” Wynne said. “We have eight seniors coming back, four of whom have won a state title and and all eight of whom have won a county championship. “Our entire back four is returning from a team that was 11-2. And we have some young kids ready to fill roles vacated by last season’s amazing senior class.” Injuries eventually caught up to Sparrows Point last season in the playoffs, particularly to then-junior midfielder Jade Weir and thenfreshman attacker Savanna Iacovelli. “Jade is very close to contact,” Wynne said. “Her rehab has gone well and she is excited about getting started on August 12. “Savanna is healthy and ready to go. We are hoping she will be a consistent scoring threat up top this year.” The four seniors who played on the 2018 state title team are Weir, Jaimee Hausner, Abby Meadows and Sara Gruntowicz. “Jonathan has many years of coaching experience and has a rapport with many of the players having served as the jayvee head coach,” Sparrows Point athletic director Paul Latanishen said. “He is surrounding himself with an amazing staff, and, as an AVID teacher, has a comprehensive academic plan for everyone in the program to ensure they are achieving at the highest level academically and have options after Sparrows Point.” Geoff Holland replaces Wynne as the junior varsity head coach. The former long-time boys head coach at Dundalk High, Holland most recently coached the women’s soccer team at CCBC Essex for several years. He also coaches track at Sparrows Point. Terry Bell will be the varsity assistant coach for Wynne. The father of former Pointer player Kalli and current player Laci, he is a long-time club soccer coach most recently with top-level Pipeline ECNL. By BILL GATES Jonathan Wynne has been handed the reigns to a powerful program that carries high expectations. Fortunately for Wynne, he’s already familiar with how it operates. Sparrows Point named Wynne as the new girls soccer head coach last week, replacing Lori Sexton. Sexton stepped down after leading the Pointer girls to a pair of state titles. Prior to that, she was an assistant coach to Joe Lambert while Sparrows Point won three other state titles. In all, Sparrows Point won six straight state titles before losing in the regional finals last year to Eastern Tech 1-0. That’s where “high expectations” come from. Wynne, however, was the Sparrows Point junior varsity girls soccer coach last season. He’s also been at the school for over 20 years and has coached various sports. Financial Future Got You Worried?
