The Dundalk Eagle
Denied Legion ball, u-14 Post 38 squad has successful travel season
They started the season as the Dundalk American Legion Post 38 under-14 team. But then came the pandemic, the national American Legion cancelled its season, and they were a team without a league.
So they became the Dundalk Destroyers, joining the Baltimore County Major League travel league (summer) and the Harford County Travel Baseball League (fall) while still being supported by Post 38 and using the Post as their home field.
And they’ve been winning. Through the two leagues and a tournament travel schedule, the Destroyers have a 24-16 record.
Dundalk won the BCML title with a 7-0 record, and is off to a 2-0 start in the HCTBL.
“We would have been playing in the Sandlot Division in American Legion ball,” manager Ken Langston said. “We’re still supported by Post 38, playing in Baltimore County and Harford County travel leagues and tournaments.”
Dundalk is competing in the 15-16 Division in the
Harford County League this fall. There are 18 teams in the league.
“There’s no football, so everyone is playing baseball,” Langston said.
The bulk of the Destroyers’ roster, including an impressive pitching staff, are or will be attending Sparrows Point and Dundalk high schools.
Sam Crowell, Ethan Grau, Ryan Zickefoose, Austin Shiflett, Danell Mann, Ray Faulk and Kenny Langston are future Pointers, while Coreem Wright and Mekhi Mancuso are Owls.
Zickefoose has pitched 50 innings with a 3.08 ERA, 79 strikeouts and 36 innings. Crowell has 41 strikeouts and 16 walks in 43 innings with a 3.09 ERA, while Shiflett has a 3.38 ERA in 37-and-a-third innings, striking out 29.
Grau has 46 strikeouts in 38-and-a-third innings (4.75 ERA), while Jake Plummer has pitched 21-and-a-third innings for a 2.30 ERA.
So far in the Harford County fall league, Dundalk has beaten the Roland Park Rangers 17-7 and the Putty Hill Panthers 4-1.
Their next four games are all at the Post 38 Field: Oct. 3 against Owings Mills, Oct. 11 against White Marsh, Oct. 18 against Bel Air and Oct. 25 against LuthervilleTimonium.
The fall league ends in early November.
