Elected officials host 2nd Annual District 25 Holiday Party & Toy Drive
Christmas is more than a week away but the season of giving back has already begun.
While Santa is busy making a list and checking it twice, elves in Prince George’s County are busy collecting gifts and toys in hopes of giving needy families with hospitalized children something to be jolly about this holiday season.
To help support families with sick loved ones at Children’s National Health System and Doctors Community Hospital, state delegates Darryl Barnes, Angela M. Angel, Dereck E. Davis and Sen. Ulysses Currie — who all represent District 25 — hosted their second annual holiday party and toy drive Monday in Largo at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Largo/Washington DC. Dozens of gifts rocked around a colorfully lit Christmas tree as guests mingled and decked the halls with lots of laughter.
“The purpose is for us to give back to those that would not ordinarily have a Christmas,” Barnes said in an interview. “Every year, we try to give back to the kids who are in the cancer ward at Children’s Hospital and now Doctors Hospital.”
For Barnes, he said there’s nothing that does the heart any greater than to see kids with smiling faces. It’s also nice to see the parents get joy out of it too, as they likely don’t have the time, energy or finances to go Christmas shopping for their kids, he said.
“I just want to do all that I can to help that population and to help those parents because their money is going into treatment and other bills,” Barnes said. “If I can provide any type of relief, along with my colleagues, then that’s what we want to do.”
Last year, Barnes said he and his colleagues collected roughly 400 toys. His goal for this year was to collect more bicycles because that was a request made at the first toy drive.
