Men cut and spear to­bacco plants at the farm of Dou­glas, Anna and Am­mon Stauf­fer on Loveville Road on Aug. 31. To­bacco fields were once com­mon on South­ern Mary­land farms, un­til the state of Mary­land be­gan a 10-year buy­out of the cash crop in 2000. Some Men­non­ite and Amish farm­ers still grow to­bacco, though.
