Recalling Medal of Honor recipients
St. Mary’s County commissioners John O’Connor (R), standing at left, and Mike Hewitt (R) present proclamations on Saturday to Wes Mumper, camp commander of the Sgt. James H. Harris Camp #38, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. The ceremony, in its second year, was held at John G. Lancaster Park in Lexington Park with several dignitaries including Lt. Tristan Engle, Patuxent River Naval Air Station chaplain, seated at left; Morgan Lloyd, aid to Sen. Steve Waugh (R-St. Mary’s, Calvert); Timothy Gowen, Maryland assistant adjutant general for Army; and Kevin Guy, Patuxent River NAS master chief. Four men from St. Mary’s County earned the Medal of Honor during the Civil War: Benjamin Swearer, James H. Harris, William H. Barnes and Joseph B. Hayden.
