Wellness clinic planned
The College of Southern Maryland’s Nursing Program will provide a free wellness clinic at the Northern Senior Activity Center on Thursday, Oct. 12, at 9 to 11:30 a.m. As a tribute to Halloween, the theme of this clinic is “Parasites and Pathogens.” Presentation topics include MRSA, diseases making a come back, parasites in food, and rabies. Health checks include blood pressure, height and weight, heart rate, and the ever popular “germ detector.” Drop-ins are welcome at this free event.
Skit group forming
If you like to ham it up a little, come to an interest meeting at the Loffler Senior Activity Center on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. This group will be performing amusing skits before the Thursday Lunch Connections (fourth Thursdays) at Loffler. Breast cancer presentation planned
October is the month dedicated to breast cancer health. Find out things ways to help reduce risk for certain types of cancer when the breast health navigator from Health Connections comes to the Loffler Senior Activity Center on Thursday, Oct. 12, at 10 a.m. Call 301-475-4200, ext. *1658, or stop by the reception desk to secure a place at this free session.
Remembering those lost
In honor of loved ones that have battled breast cancer, the Northern Senior Activity Center is asking that members wear pink on Friday, Oct. 13, to show their support. In addition, staff will collect names and copies of photographs of loved ones that have fought breast cancer and will use them to decorate our Pink Strong table.
Art project planned for Day of Pink
Mothers, daughters and granddaughters, can celebrate the Day of Pink by participating in an intergenerational painting event at the Northern Senior Activity Center, which will host Southern Maryland Wine & Design as they lead a painting event for participants age 18 and older on Friday, Oct. 13, at 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Learn to paint a fall foliage scene (with pink leaves of course) on a rustic barn star. R&B line dancing planned
A new session of R&B line dancing is starting on Mondays at 1:30 p.m., from Oct. 16 to Nov. 20, at the Garvey Senior Activity Center. Learn dances like the Cupid shuffle or the wobble. Make a craft
The Garvey Senior Activity center will be offering a craft class with Deb on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. She will guide participants in creating marble mugs. The fee for this class is $2, and payment is due at the time of reservation. To make reservations, call 301-475-4200, ext. *1050.
Safe driving class offered
The next AARP Safe-Driving course will be held at the Loffler Senior Activity Center on Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (with an hour lunch break). This program includes emphasis on roundabouts, pavement markings, stop-sign compliance, red-light running, and safety issues such as speeding, seat belt and turn signal use. The cost is $15 for AARP members, $20 for non-members, payable on the day of class. Cycle on the trail
On Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. the Northern Senior Activity Center will have a cycling event on the Three Notch Trail sponsored by the YES Cycling Program. Each ride is customized to the needs of the group and is led by Dan Donahue. The Northern center has three bicycles and one trike available to borrow. Make art with wine corks
Personalize a wall hanging letter using different wine corks at this class held at the Garvey Senior Activity Center on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 1:30 p.m. The center will provide the wine corks, all you need to bring is the letter (suggested size is 12 inches). There will be sparkling cider and cheese served. The cost for this program is $2. Class size is limited so register by calling 301-475-4200, ext. *1050.
Members of Girl Scout Cadette Troop 1678 Cate Kinslow, left, Ariel Viar, Reagan Stanalonis and Desiree Copeland collect donations of cleaning supplies in front of the Dollar Store in Mechanicsville to help with the flood relief due to Hurricane Harvey. The United Methodist Committee on Relief was collecting buckets of supplies to provide relief from Harvey, and each bucket contains a specific set of supplies and costs about $65. The Scouts collected enough to donate four complete buckets plus some extra cleaning supplies.
