Well­ness clinic planned

The Col­lege of South­ern Mary­land’s Nurs­ing Pro­gram will pro­vide a free well­ness clinic at the North­ern Se­nior Ac­tiv­ity Cen­ter on Thurs­day, Oct. 12, at 9 to 11:30 a.m. As a trib­ute to Hal­loween, the theme of this clinic is “Par­a­sites and Pathogens.” Pre­sen­ta­tion top­ics in­clude MRSA, dis­eases mak­ing a come back, par­a­sites in food, and ra­bies. Health checks in­clude blood pres­sure, height and weight, heart rate, and the ever pop­u­lar “germ de­tec­tor.” Drop-ins are wel­come at this free event.

Skit group form­ing

If you like to ham it up a lit­tle, come to an in­ter­est meet­ing at the Lof­fler Se­nior Ac­tiv­ity Cen­ter on Wed­nes­day, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. This group will be per­form­ing amus­ing skits be­fore the Thurs­day Lunch Con­nec­tions (fourth Thurs­days) at Lof­fler. No scripts, no tech work — all that is re­quired is a bit of hu­mor and at­tend­ing a few prac­tices dur­ing the month. Breast can­cer pre­sen­ta­tion planned

Oc­to­ber is the month ded­i­cated to breast can­cer health. Find out things ways to help re­duce risk for cer­tain types of can­cer when the breast health nav­i­ga­tor from Health Con­nec­tions comes to the Lof­fler Se­nior Ac­tiv­ity Cen­ter on Thurs­day, Oct. 12, at 10 a.m. Call 301-475-4200, ext. *1658, or stop by the re­cep­tion desk to se­cure a place at this free ses­sion.

Re­mem­ber­ing those lost

In honor of loved ones that have bat­tled breast can­cer, the North­ern Se­nior Ac­tiv­ity Cen­ter is ask­ing that mem­bers wear pink on Fri­day, Oct. 13, to show their sup­port. In ad­di­tion, staff will col­lect names and copies of pho­to­graphs of loved ones that have fought breast can­cer and will use them to dec­o­rate our Pink Strong ta­ble.

Art project planned for Day of Pink

Moth­ers, daugh­ters and grand­daugh­ters, can cel­e­brate the Day of Pink by par­tic­i­pat­ing in an in­ter­gen­er­a­tional paint­ing event at the North­ern Se­nior Ac­tiv­ity Cen­ter, which will host South­ern Mary­land Wine & De­sign as they lead a paint­ing event for par­tic­i­pants age 18 and older on Fri­day, Oct. 13, at 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Learn to paint a fall fo­liage scene (with pink leaves of course) on a rus­tic barn star. R&B line danc­ing planned

A new ses­sion of R&B line danc­ing is start­ing on Mon­days at 1:30 p.m., from Oct. 16 to Nov. 20, at the Gar­vey Se­nior Ac­tiv­ity Cen­ter. Learn dances like the Cupid shuf­fle or the wob­ble. The cost per class will be $12 for all six classes payable to Marie Bond; pay­ment is due at time of reser­va­tion. Call the Gar­vey cen­ter at 301-475-4200, ext. *1050 for more.

Make a craft

The Gar­vey Se­nior Ac­tiv­ity cen­ter will be of­fer­ing a craft class with Deb on Wed­nes­day, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. She will guide par­tic­i­pants in cre­at­ing mar­ble mugs. Safe driv­ing class of­fered

The next AARP Safe-Driv­ing course will be held at the Lof­fler Se­nior Ac­tiv­ity Cen­ter on Wed­nes­day, Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (with an hour lunch break). This pro­gram in­cludes em­pha­sis on round­abouts, pave­ment mark­ings, stop-sign com­pli­ance, red-light run­ning, and safety is­sues such as speed­ing, seat belt and turn sig­nal use. The cost is $15 for AARP mem­bers, $20 for non-mem­bers, payable on the day of class. Cy­cle on the trail

On Wed­nes­day, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. the North­ern Se­nior Ac­tiv­ity Cen­ter will have a cy­cling event on the Three Notch Trail spon­sored by the YES Cy­cling Pro­gram. Each ride is cus­tom­ized to the needs of the group and is led by Dan Don­ahue. The North­ern cen­ter has three bi­cy­cles and one trike avail­able to bor­row. The cen­ter does re­quire that all par­tic­i­pants wear a hel­met and carry a cell­phone on the ride. To sign up for the ride or to re­serve a cy­cle, call 301-475-4200, ext. *3103.

Make art with wine corks

Per­son­al­ize a wall hang­ing let­ter us­ing dif­fer­ent wine corks at this class held at the Gar­vey Se­nior Ac­tiv­ity Cen­ter on Wed­nes­day, Oct. 18, at 1:30 p.m. The cen­ter will pro­vide the wine corks, all you need to bring is the let­ter (sug­gested size is 12 inches). There will be sparkling cider and cheese served. The cost for this pro­gram is $2. Class size is lim­ited so reg­is­ter by call­ing 301-475-4200, ext. *1050.


Mem­bers of Girl Scout Cadette Troop 1678 Cate Kinslow, left, Ariel Viar, Rea­gan Stanalo­nis and De­siree Copeland col­lect do­na­tions of clean­ing sup­plies in front of the Dol­lar Store in Me­chan­icsville to help with the flood re­lief due to Hur­ri­cane Har­vey. The United Methodist Com­mit­tee on Re­lief was col­lect­ing buck­ets of sup­plies to pro­vide re­lief from Har­vey, and each bucket con­tains a spe­cific set of sup­plies and costs about $65. The Scouts col­lected enough to do­nate four com­plete buck­ets plus some ex­tra clean­ing sup­plies.
