State tree nursery taking orders for shrub, tree seedlings
The John S. Ayton State Forest Tree Nursery, managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, is currently accepting shrub and tree seedling orders.
The nursery offers more than 50 species of trees and shrubs to meet a wide variety of landscaping preferences and conservation needs. Popular this year are the many trees and shrubs that are beneficial for pollinators. Anyone interested in helping create much-needed pollinator habitats can look for plantings listed as “pollinator friendly” in the nursery catalog.
“Our customers are mostly individual landowners who look forward to planting trees and shrubbery on their properties to enhance the beauty of the natural land as well as contribute positively to the environment,” said Richard Garrett, Maryland State Forest tree nursery manager. “The plantings provide habitats for numerous forest creatures, including pollinators as well as birds and mammals.”
The nursery is now taking orders for largescale plantings on private lands. A minimum order of 25 seedlings per species is required, and supplies are limited. To choose trees and place an order, go to http://nurs- ery.dnr.maryland.gov/. For more information, call 410-673-2467.
The state tree nursery produces millions of tree and shrub seedlings each year for reforestation and other plantings across Maryland and Delaware. The nursery is located near Preston on the Eastern Shore.
Ninety percent of Maryland’s forest land is owned by private woodland owners, according to the Department of Natural Resources website.
