Mike Wilson, a member of the Second District Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad in Valley Lee, sits Monday afternoon in a 25-foot former U.S. Coast Guard boat that he said the organization acquired with help received from Del. Deb Rey (R-St. Mary’s) in contacting the Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ Forest Service, which got the vessel through a Federal Excess Property Program administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service. The boat, valued at $400,000, underwent further improvements after it was turned over to the fire and rescue volunteers at the end of the two-year acquisition process, and the state delegate was credited this week with working to encourage the state agency’s participation in a similar Department of Defense Firefighter Property Program.
