He knows public funding of elections is vital to survival of our democracy

We are supporting Green Party candidate Pat Elder for Congress. Pat is a lifelong peace and justice activist. He is advocating for a healthy, clean environment, the public financing of elections, health insurance and education.

As a third-party candidate, he is addressing issues that might otherwise be neglected, such as shutting down the Chalk Point and Morgantown coalfired plants. According to Elder, the heart of Rep. Steny Hoyer’s 5th District will soon have six electrical generating plants. Elder maintains that we should be doing a better job of switching to renewable energy sources like solar and wind. We agree with him. Elder says that much of the developed world is ahead of us in this regard because here, our political process allows large, powerful corporations such as energy companies to support candidates who will allow them to continue polluting our air and waterways.

Pat Elder has brought to our attention that Hoyer (D-Md., 5th) has received over $6 million in campaign contributions, mostly from large corporations. This allows big businesses to influence our congressman’s agenda. We agree with Pat Elder that public funding of elections is vital to the survival of our democracy.

Hoyer won with 67 percent of the vote in the 2016 election. If Pat Elder can obtain 10 percent of the vote on Nov. 6, it will send a clear message that there are many citizens who believe that we do need to change and improve our political system.

Pat Elder is initiating and encouraging discussion of these important issues in our community.

Please thoughtfully consider voting for Pat Elder for Congress in Maryland’s 5th District.

Ted and Charlotte Yeatman, Dameron
